Raymond A. Swanson, M.D.
My clinical practice is at the San Francisco Veterans Affairs Medical Center. My research experience began as an undergraduate at the University of Michigan, and has evolved to focus on bioenergetics and oxidative stress in disease.

Seok Joon Won, Ph.D.
Research Scientist
My Ph.D. work, in the lab of Byoung Joo Gwag at Ajou University, addressed the paradoxical role of neurotrophic factors as pro-death signaling factors. I subsequently did a post-doctoral fellowship with Prof. David Greenberg at the Buck Institute for Age Research, and joined the Swanson lab in 2008. My work here has focused on aspects of oxidative stress in brain ischemia, brain trauma, and Parkinson’s disease, and employs several animal of each of these disorders.
Kate Harris, Ph.D
Post-doctoral Scholar
I have recently completed my PhD in Clinical Neurosciences at the University of Cambridge, during which I investigated the role of dopaminergic signaling in the pathogenesis of Huntington’s disease. I joined the Swanson group in January 2022, where my research will focus on oxidative stress in Parkinson’s disease. I am specifically interested in how alpha synuclein interacts with metal ions to generate reactive oxygen species. I will also help to characterize a novel mechanism by which neurons uptake superoxide anion and determine whether this process is contributes neuronal demise in Parkinson’s disease.
Devran Ogut, B.S.
Lab Manager
I am a recent graduate of UC Berkeley, where I majored in Molecular and Cellular Biology as well
as Public Health. I'm interested in learning how neurological diseases can influence mental health vice-versa. I am now the lab manager for the Swanson Lab. I spend my free time doing all sorts of exercise as well watching sports and exploring my local area. |
Nguyen Mai, M.D., Ph.D.
R25 Research Fellow
I completed my MD and PhD in neuroscience at the University of Rochester, and my graduate work highlighted the mechanisms of pulmonary superoxide dismutase-mediated neuroprotection after global brain ischemia. I recently graduated from neurology residency at UCSF and joined the Swanson lab as an R25 research fellow. My work here focuses on the effects of oxidative stress on neurite injury after focal stroke, and this project complements my clinical interests in stroke therapeutics and the relationship between inflammation and neuronal injury.

Sona Asatryan
Student (UC Berkeley)
I am a rising senior at UC Berkeley majoring in Molecular and Cellular Neurobiology and minoring in Armenian Studies. Since joining the Swanson lab in October of 2023, I've really enjoyed exploring all the different aspects of scientific research and learning about oxidative stress in stroke models. When I’m not doing school or lab work, I’m either hiking the hills of Berkeley or exploring Sf!
Jed Fogleson
Student (UCLA)
Student (UCLA)
My name is Jed Fogelson and I’m from Oakland, California. I am currently a sophomore at UCLA majoring in neuroscience on the pre-med track. Specifically, I’m really interested in how the brain adapts in response to injury and other forms of stimuli. For fun I really like to rock climb, play guitar, and ski.
Rhea Kumar
Student (Lynbrook High School)
I am a rising senior at Lynbrook High School in San Jose. I am interested in how neurobiology research contributes to developing treatments for neurological diseases, as I hope to one day pursue a career in the medical field. In my free time I enjoy going on walks with my dog, listening to music, and reading novels of the thriller and fantasy genres.
